South Iceland has a diverse and spectacular natural environment with great attraction that is easy to access and experience all year round.
Jökulsárlón literally means “glacial river lagoon”. I’m sure you have heard about this beautiful natural wonder of Iceland. The lagoon is located on the south-east side of the country and can be seen from the main road nr. 1 so if you are surfing around in this area you have to make a stop there.
The Namafjall geothermal field is located in Northeast Iceland, on the east side of Lake Myvatn.Â
At this area, also known as Hverir, you may see many solfataras and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulfur crystals of many different colours. The area is quite smelly but something one gets used to after a while. The soil in the area has little growth and is sour due to erosion and the sulfur from the atmosphere. Indeed, the old rock-covered boreholes in the area give off a lot of hot steam.
Caution is advised.
The arctic fox is native to Labrador and occasionally arrives on the Island via pack ice in Winter and Spring.
This one I did encounter on Latrabjarg in Iceland, he had just caught a prey and was busy eating it. We watched him for quite a while. It most definately was an amazing moment.
In winter, the arctic fox has a thick white coat. In May, they shed to a two-tone brown fur.
Some arctic foxes have a heavy, pale bluish-gray coat in summer (blue fox). They have a compact body, short snout and small ears to minimize heat loss. A thick coat and padded feet help it keep insulated throughout the year; they rarely have to seek shelter, even in winter.
Arctic foxes live for 3 or 4 years in the wild and up to 14 years in captivity. I still wonder what age this fox was…

Þingeyjarsýsla county is home to many incredible sites.
Particularly due to the fact that the Lake Mývatn region is nestled within it. This beautiful area is renowned for its lava formations, pseudocraters and rich birdlife.

Near Mývatn is the impressive lava field Dimmuborgir which featured in the Game of Thrones series.
There is also the incredible waterfall Godafoss, a beautiful feature between the lakes and Akureyri.
