Those two came to the waterhole close to sunset at Etosha National Park.
The arctic fox is native to Labrador and occasionally arrives on the Island via pack ice in Winter and Spring.
This one I did encounter on Latrabjarg in Iceland, he had just caught a prey and was busy eating it. We watched him for quite a while. It most definately was an amazing moment.
In winter, the arctic fox has a thick white coat. In May, they shed to a two-tone brown fur.
Some arctic foxes have a heavy, pale bluish-gray coat in summer (blue fox). They have a compact body, short snout and small ears to minimize heat loss. A thick coat and padded feet help it keep insulated throughout the year; they rarely have to seek shelter, even in winter.
Arctic foxes live for 3 or 4 years in the wild and up to 14 years in captivity. I still wonder what age this fox was…
Whenever I encounter this little antelope it always manages to draw out a long “aaaahhhhh†from me – some people may in fact believe they see a little baby.
In fact when fully grown the steenbok is only about 60cm at the shoulders. They are highly territorial and can have territories as small as 900 square metres, which is only 30m x 30m.
Such a small territory will have to contain some high quality food. Steenbok will eat anything from leaves and grasses to berries and seeds. If their food sources are high, steenbok may pair up for life, but in most cases these antelope are solitary creatures only coming together when they need to mate.
Steenbok are also the only antelope to have toilet etiquette – they dig a hole in which they will urinate or defecate.
Once finished they will cover the hole up which is useful for 2 reasons; firstly it retains the moisture and scent for longer meaning they have to mark their territory less.
It also leaves less of a visual marker for predators, which is especially important seeing as they have such small territories.
Nature is simply amazing!

Rhino Kiss – Rhinos, survivors of prehistoric times
Rhinos are among the ‘ancients’ on our planet.
Rhinos are among the ‘ancients’ on our planet.
As well as elephants and hippos are the surviving representatives of an animal group that once was very species-rich and versatile war: the mega-herbivores, even the big herbivores.
Rhinos are named after their most conspicuous feature: their horns.
The two African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros are two consecutively arranged horns, of which the front end is the longer.
Tank and Java rhinos have only one horn at the end of the snout.
